Frenuloplasty involves the cutting and lengthening of the frenulum, the small tag of skin on the underside of the penis, between the foreskin and shaft, to allow normal retraction of the foreskin during erection. Frenuloplasty is one of the most common surgical procedures performed at Colin Teo Urology.
Tight penile frenulum is also known as frenulum breve (short frenulum). The frenulum is usually cut during routine circumcision in boys, so most men with frenulum breve are uncircumcised. A tight frenulum causes pain or pulling during an erection or sexual stimulation. It can tear, causing more pain, infection, or scarring. As it scars, the frenulum becomes shorter, tighter, and more painful, resulting in a vicious cycle of pain.
Frenuloplasty is a surgical procedure to fix the tight penile frenulum condition. Lasting about 10 minutes, the surgery is performed in the office with local anaesthesia. It involves making a small cut in the middle of the frenulum to release the tight band and then reconstructing it by sewing it closed.
You will get some swelling and bruising of the penis, which may last several days. All your stitches will disappear within two to three weeks. Pain medications are usually not required. Cleaning the surgical area is critical during recovery to prevent infection. Keep your wound dry after passing urine.
Some patients experience foreskin tightening for a couple of weeks and cannot pull it back during that time. Sexual activity must wait for four weeks.
The sensation of the penis and the ability to get an erection, achieve orgasm, and urinate will remain the same after frenuloplasty. Circumcision may be needed if frenuloplasty does not solve the patient’s problems.
